HYBOR hydrogen pipeline: Ground investigations and mapping begin

The scoping process for the planned HYBOR hydrogen pipeline has begun in all affected federal states – Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia. In this early stage of the process, the scope of the investigations for further environmental assessments is being defined in collaboration with the relevant authorities and public interest groups. This lays the groundwork for the subsequent environmental impact assessment and the planning approval process.
Preparatory investigations have been underway along the planned route since the end of 2025. These include environmental mapping of flora and fauna as well as ground investigations. The aim is to assess local conditions at an early stage and to align further planning responsibly with natural and site-specific conditions.

Stegra has agreed in principle on €1.4 billion in new financing from a combination of new and existing investors to complete the construction of its large-scale green steel plant in Boden, Sweden.
The financing round is led by Wallenberg Investments, which has formed a consortium of investors that will, through this transaction, take a leading position in Stegra. Alongside Wallenberg Investments, the consortium consists of Temasek and IMAS. Funding is further strongly supported by Stegra’s existing shareholders, including Altor who will be the second largest owner post-closing, as well as Hy24 and Just Climate. It is also supported, subject to credit approvals, by its senior and junior lenders. This provides Stegra with a fully funded path to complete the construction and commissioning of its green steel plant.

Nordic energy company Gasum and shipping company Wasaline have extended their agreement for bio-LNG supply to continue through 2027. This agreement continues to strengthen the companies’ long-standing partnership.
It also underlines both companies’ commitment to developing cleaner maritime transport. Wasaline runs a carbon neutral shipping corridor between Finland and Sweden, as the company’s vessel Aurora Botnia uses batteries and biogas to operate the route. Gasum supplies the vessel with bio-LNG.

To reach net zero emissions by 2045, Sweden must electrify its transport sector. In the Spring Amending Budget, the Government and the Sweden Democrats intend to allocate more funding to expand the electric vehicle premium and to increase government agencies’ purchasing of fossil-free alternatives.
“Electrification is the future. These are two proposals aimed at furthering the transition by electrifying our transportation and thereby making society less sensitive to, for example, oil price surges,” says Acting Minister for Climate and the Environment Johan Britz.

Within the framework of the international Nordic–Baltic Hydrogen Corridor development project, the unified gas transmission and storage system operator AS Conexus Baltic Grid (“Conexus”) plans to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). If the project is implemented, the hydrogen corridor in Latvia would be developed parallel to the existing natural gas transmission pipeline.
Currently, several alternative options for the development of hydrogen transmission infrastructure are being explored in the Northern European region, including one project that envisages Latvia’s participation and would cross Latvian territory. However, the current research phase represents only one of the initial steps toward the potential implementation of the project. As with other infrastructure projects, this initiative requires both an EIA and other tasks related to technical and economic feasibility studies.

Metsä Group has launched a preliminary planning project for the first commercial biogenic carbon dioxide capture plant. As part of the plant’s financing plan, the company has submitted an application to a reverse auction organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, which awards investment grants to clean transition projects.
The potential facility would be located adjacent to Metsä Group’s Rauma pulp mill, and its nominal capacity would be approximately 100,000 tons of captured wood-based carbon dioxide per year. The carbon dioxide would be captured from the mill’s flue gases. This would be a commercial production facility, and its planned capacity would be the first step toward a larger scale: at Metsä Group, the long-term carbon dioxide capture potential from wood is several million tons per year. Carbon dioxide can be used as a raw material in the chemical and fuel industries, among others, and can replace the use of fossil raw materials.

The group explored the company’s technology and capabilities, including its battery‑grade graphite production capabilities.
CEO Laura Rahikka and Chairman of the Board Matti Malkamäki hosted the visitors. Following the tour, Malkamäki provided an in-depth briefing on Hycamite’s methane-splitting technology, its role in electrification, and our capacity to convert carbon into battery-grade graphite. Hycamite’s industrial-scale demonstration plant capacity produces 2 kt hydrogen annually in addition to high-value, solid carbon products.

In a significant move to bolster European energy independence, Hydrogen Cluster Finland and Poland’s key Hydrogen Cluster Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley Association (LSHVA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the creation of an integrated hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea region. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the leading Polish hydrogen conference, H2 Poland, taking place in Poznań.
The parties agree to cooperate in advancing a sustainable and safe green and low carbon hydrogen economy through knowledge exchange, ecosystem building, and mutual promotion of innovation and industry development. In addition to its regional role in one of the key hydrogen hubs of Poland, LSHVA will serve as national coordination platform for Finnish-Polish hydrogen interests.
