Cross-border collaboration can strengthen sustainable cultural tourism

Strong and durable collaboration between cultural actors and tourism stakeholders across Northern Sweden and Northern Finland could play an important role in strengthening regional development in the Bothnian Arc. This conclusion is presented in a new white paper produced within the ACCENT project, a cross-border collaboration between the University of Oulu, Luleå University of Technology, LTU Business, and the Oulu Culture Foundation.

The white paper, Opening pathways to sustainable cultural tourism in the North, presents evidence-based insights from the ACCENT project on how culture-led tourism can support sustainable regional development across Northern Sweden and Northern Finland.

New railway meets industry’s transport needs

Port of Luleå now completes first phase of new land infrastructure – a major investment to handle increased traffic and cargo volumes. – We are meeting our customers’ needs for flexible and sustainable transport solutions, says Anders Dahl, CEO of Port of Luleå.

In May, work began to increase capacity and modernise Port of Luleå’s railway facility. It stretches from the Swedish Transport Administration’s tracks, located a few kilometers from the port, to the connection to Viktoriahamnen. At the terminal area, one track has now become three to handle larger cargo volumes and meet customer demands. This means the railway is ready to operate with axle loads of 32.5 tonnes – a unique capacity in Sweden.

– More and heavier trains can operate on our railway. The work we have done is a major and important part of the port’s infrastructure investments. We are now ready to receive larger cargo volumes, says Anders Dahl, CEO of Port of Luleå.

The Baltic Sea could become a leader in climate-smart shipping – but unclear regulations are slowing progress

The Baltic Sea region has strong potential to take a lead in the transition to climate-smart marine fuels, but faces delays due to high costs and unclear political policy direction. This is highlighted in a new report from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, in which Port of Luleå is studied.

The new report, which examines market conditions among the eight countries around the Baltic Sea, shows that hydrogen-based electrofuels – such as electro-ammonia and electro-methanol – will be crucial for meeting climate targets. Shipping is one of the sectors where transition to fossil-free operations is progressing slowly. The report shows that energy companies and ports see these new fuels as essential in the long term, but stakeholders hesitate to invest because of uncertainity about future demand or which fuel type will dominate. John Sundvall, Technical Director at Port of Luleå, confirms this and sees the development of renewable fuels as a necessity to meet future requirements from shipping companies and industry.

– In northern Sweden, a major energy transition in industry is underway, which could also benefit shipping. As a transport hub and one of EU’s strategically designated ports, we naturally want to contribute to this transition. It is possible to build infrastructure here for both bunkering and export, but for us to invest, the market needs to become more secure, he says.
