Sitra strengthens its voice in Brussels

In February, Ilkka Räsänen took up his role as Sitra’s first Head of EU Affairs, strengthening Sitra’s presence in Brussels.
The Head of EU Affairs position in Brussels supports Sitra’s strategic goal of being a trusted partner in the EU and globally. In practice, this means expanding networks, deepening partnerships for EU funding programmes, and bolstering Sitra’s EU advocacy. AI offers new opportunities that free up social and health care professionals’ time from administrative and repetitive tasks for more important duties, such as seeing people face-to-face. AI has been helping to automate patient data entry and interpret meetings. Moreover, AI can be used to assist in guiding clients to the right services.

Finland could accelerate clinical trials through a “one-stop shop” model and shared systems and practices. This is outlined in Sitra’s publication FinTrials – National Framework for Clinical Drug Trials (summary in English).
Finland has long been known for its high-quality healthcare and strong research expertise. However, the number of clinical drug trials conducted in recent years has clearly declined. Reasons for this development include fragmented operating models, insufficient national coordination, and slow and complex processes.
“To strengthen Finland’s position as an attractive country for clinical drug trials, we need more cooperation and national-level coordination. Many other European countries, especially the Nordic countries, have shown that national cooperation is an effective way to increase the number of clinical drug trials,” emphasises Petri Lehto, leader of Sitra’s DigiHealth project.

Our administrative structures were created under conditions that no longer exist. This makes it difficult to manage long-term challenges such as demographic change, argues a new publication by Sitra and The Institutional Architecture Lab (TIAL).
The Rethinking Institutions in an era of Demographic Transition report offers concrete proposals tailored to Finland’s situation, along with international examples of how institutions can be reformed to meet the needs of today and tomorrow. According to the report, reform and foresight are essential if Finland is to respond effectively to the changes brought about by demographic development.
Demographic change is challenging the foundations of society: aging populations, declining birth rates, and migration trends directly affect the sustainability of the welfare system, labor markets, and agility of governance.
