Deep tech startup Reduciner introduces novel technology to turn captured carbon into sustainable fuels

Reduciner, a deep tech startup originating from VTT, is commercialising a novel high-temperature technology that enables industrial companies to turn captured carbon dioxide (CO2) into usable fuel and valuable industrial raw materials. The company raised EUR 3.6 million in its first funding round, consisting of equity funding from Voima Ventures, Lifeline Ventures, and Mikko Kodisoja Foundation. In addition, VTT has transferred the underlying user rights to the technology and IP as an in-kind investment to the newly established company.

Reduciner’s technology involves a proprietary thermochemical process that efficiently converts CO₂ into carbon monoxide (CO), using renewable electricity and biogenic carbon. The innovation allows indirect electrification of combustion processes, enabling large-scale production of sustainable fuels and chemicals and a significant reduction of industrial carbon dioxide emissions globally. Since CO is already compatible with existing industrial systems, the solution allows companies to reduce emissions without costly infrastructure changes.

Finland and Australia looking to join forces on quantum technologies

A delegation from VTT at the Quantum Australia Conference to discuss potential areas of collaboration with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, under VTT’s new ‘Quantum Leap’ project. The Quantum Leap project will focus on the practical implementation of quantum computing, including quantum software, error correction and mitigation, and components to make quantum computers more energy efficient, reliable and scalable.

Anu Kärkkäinen, Research Manager at VTT, said that an essential part of the Quantum Leap Project is about building strong networks with global quantum communities: “Quantum technologies are anticipated to provide unprecedented advances in computing, sensing and communications, with the potential to transform business and society globally. FFS2 project delivers solutions to decarbonise steel production

VTT has published its key results from the national Towards Fossil‑Free Steel (FFS2) project as part of the consortium final report. VTT’s work in FFS2 focused on solutions that help steel producers replace fossil fuels and make full use of industrial side streams in a future fossil‑free value chain.

The transition to fossil free steel requires not only new energy sources, but also system level solutions that work on an industrial scale. In the FFS2 project, VTT has addressed this challenge by developing and validating technologies that integrate electrification, hydrogen and circular material flows into existing and future steelmaking processes. The results strengthen the technological basis for industrial decision making and support a faster, lower risk transition towards fossil-free steel production

Leena Rantasalo has been appointed as vice-president, communications and brand for VTT. She moves to the position after having headed VTT’s internal and external communications, media relations and the communications team since 2018. Previously, she headed development of VTT’s culture.
