Klaipėda port’s green course: international ferries will soon be able to switch off their engines while berthed
Port or Klaipėda continues to move along its green course. The port’s terminals have already received the new on-shore power supply systems, and installation is now underway. Testing is planned to begin later this year, and by next year ferries calling at the designated ro-ro terminals will be able to switch off their engines and draw clean electricity from shore -significantly reducing air pollution and noise. The OPS infrastructure being installed in the port is designed specifically for ro-ro vessels, with a total of four shore-power connection points to be set up for ferries.
“Klaipėda Port’s green vision is becoming reality – sustainability here is no longer just a promise. With shore-side electricity, ferries will be able to shut down their engines and reduce their environmental footprint to almost zero. And this is only the beginning. It’s more than a technological milestone – it’s our commitment to the city, its people, and a cleaner future for our sea,” says Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
This initiative marks a significant step in Klaipėda Port’s wider shift toward electrification. Earlier this autumn, the port installed its first on-shore power system at the Fleet Base, designed mainly to support the new hydrogen and electric-powered waste collection vessel now nearing completion. The systems now being put in place at the two terminals are specifically tailored for ferries and ro-ro vessels operating between Klaipėda and Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Poland, carrying rolling cargo. In the coming years, similar systems are planned for other terminals as well, enabling shore-side electricity for cruise ships and container vessels.

With the conclusion of its third edition, GameTech has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of Lithuania’s video game ecosystem, marking a significant milestone in the country’s strategy to position games as a high-impact creative and technological industry.
Since its launch, GameTech, an initiative led by the Lithuanian government together with Startup Lithuania and powered by GameBCN, has acted as a catalyst for emerging and growing game studios, combining acceleration, international expertise, and ecosystem building. Across its three editions, the program has demonstrated both scale and depth in its impact. Over the course of the program’s history, more than 250 teams applied, reflecting the strong demand for specialized support in the gaming sector. From these, 32 teams were selected to participate, representing a diverse range of studios at different stages of development, from early concepts to companies preparing for global scale-up.
GameTech has delivered over 1,000 hours of mentoring and training, provided by an international network of industry experts covering game production, business development, publishing, monetization, and investment readiness. This intensive support has been complemented by 24 public events, including masterclasses, open days, demo days, and play-testing sessions, designed not only to accelerate teams but also to strengthen the broader Lithuanian gaming community and its visibility.

Starting in 2026, the first Finnish Air Force Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multi-role fighters will arrive in Finland, and the first fighter was presented on 16th December 2026 in Texas.
The F-35 fighters will strengthen Finland’s defense capability and security of supply for decades to come. A total of 64 F-35 fighters will be delivered to Finland.
As a strategic partner of the Finnish Defence Forces, Insta supports the building of the Defence Forces’ capabilities throughout the life-cycle of the systems. So far, Insta has been responsible for the maintenance of the avionics systems on the Hornet fighter jets. As a long-term partner, Insta’s cooperation with the Defence Forces will continue for decades into the F-35 era.

The Port of Klaipėda handled nearly 36 million tonnes of cargo over the first eleven months of the year, maintaining double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. Growth was driven by containerised cargo, ro-ro freight transported by ferries, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), with Klaipėda remaining the leading port among the Baltic States.
Over the first eleven months of this year, nearly 12 million tonnes of containerised cargo were handled at the Port of Klaipėda, representing a 29% increase compared to the same period last year. Containerised cargo accounts for 33% of the port’s total cargo throughput this year.
Since the beginning of the year, almost 1.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) have been handled at the Port of Klaipėda, which is a 23% increase year-on-year. The milestone of one million TEUs was reached earlier than ever before in the port’s history — in October. Traditionally, Klaipėda would join the “millionaire ports” in December.

From December 15, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) will begin accepting project applications for the foreign film and major event support program with total funding of €10.7 million over a two-year period. Applications will be accepted until January 30, 2026.
The program helps Latvia compete internationally by attracting new film projects and encouraging event organizers in Latvia to hold international events that attract large numbers of foreign visitors.
The program aims to promote the export of services, raise Latvia’s profile, and generate long-term economic benefits by using Latvia as a platform for film production and international events.

On 16 December, a ceremony was held in the Free Trade Zone at the Port of Gdańsk to inaugurate two modern warehouses belonging to Solid Port, one of the key operators in the Inner Port.
Solid Port conducts tasks like handling operations at the WOC (Free Trade Zone) Quay. As part of the new investment, on land leased from the Port of Gdańsk for 30 years, they have erected two steel-structured tent-type buildings, designed on a rectangular plan with 40×60 m base dimensions plus a ridge height of 14.5 m. The walls and roofs of the halls have been made using a durable PVC coating. These warehouses are used to store organic fertilisers.
Solid Port has a significant role in handling such bulk cargo as loose raw materials, aggregates and fertilisers. These types of cargo are essential for the functioning of many sectors of the economy, including industry, agriculture and trade. The activities of such entities make it possible to maintain the continuity of supplies of these strategic goods. It has invested consistently in the development of infrastructure and superstructure for many years, systematically raising the cargo handling standards.

A team of experts with over 15 years of experience in funding businesses has launched Aneli Capital, a fund to support early-stage startups in the Baltics, Poland, and other Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The €35 million fund will primarily focus on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as well as robotics, space, photonics, and energy startups, with the goal of helping them grow and become ready for follow-on investors.
While CEE startups are gradually becoming more visible in the international startup scene, they still face issues such as a lack of funding and difficulties in scaling compared to their Western counterparts.
Aneli Capital plans to help solve these challenges by offering efficient, quick decision-making and founder-friendly terms in addition to capital.

Latvian airline airBaltic has announced frequency increases on more than 30 existing routes across the Baltics for the Summer 2026 season. The airline will increase frequencies on 20 routes from Riga (Latvia), four from Tallinn (Estonia) and seven from Vilnius (Lithuania). This expansion will offer passengers more convenient travel choices and improved connectivity.
Mantas Vrubliauskas, VP Network Management at airBaltic: “Our summer 2026 expansion reflects a clear focus on our customers and their travel needs. By increasing frequencies on popular business and leisure routes, we are offering better connectivity, and greater flexibility to travellers, while continuing to strengthen Latvia’s and the Baltic States’ connectivity with Europe and beyond.”
For the upcoming summer season, airBaltic will launch ten new routes from the Baltic capitals. From Riga, flights will operate to Antalya (Turkey), Gothenburg (Sweden), Kaunas (Lithuania), Oulu (Finland), and Warsaw (Poland). From Tallinn, the airline will launch flights to Athens (Greece), Hamburg (Germany), and Vienna (Austria), while from Vilnius, new flights will connect to Chisinau (Moldova) and Zurich (Switzerland).

Lietuvos bankas has granted an authorisation of a crypto-asset service provider to Nuvei Liquidity, UAB for the provision of custody and administration of crypto-assets, transfer services for crypto-assets, exchange of crypto-assets for funds and other crypto-assets.
The company has also obtained the payment institution licence, authorising it to perform operations with electronic money tokens (EMT).
Nuvei Liquidity, UAB, which has operated in Lithuania since 2004, is part of the Nuvei Group, one of Canada’s largest providers of financial technology services, operating in more than 20 jurisdictions.
