Digital innovations for the future of ports featured at the German-Latvian Port Days
On April 15, in the framework of the German-Latvian Port Days in Hamburg, the Maritime Digital Innovation Demo Day took place, where innovative solutions – digital and autonomous technologies for port efficiency, safety and security – jointly created by Latvian and German partners were presented.
“What started with a visit and a signature is now becoming visible and tangible: this Demo Day shows how the partnership transforms into practical solutions. Hamburg and Riga combine technological excellence with a clear ambition to make our ports smarter, more efficient and future-ready. This is not about discussing innovations, but about implementing them together. In particularly challenging times, one thing is clear: those who work together move forward. On 1 April 2026, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the promotion of long-term investment in Latvia’s transport and logistics sector was signed at the Ministry of Economics. The memorandum was signed by Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis, Director General of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) Ieva Jāgere, and Povilas Drižas, Secretary General of the International Transport and Logistics Alliance (Tarptautinio transporto ir logistikos aljansas – TTLA). The objective of the memorandum is to facilitate the expansion of Lithuanian transport and logistics companies in Latvia, strengthening regional cooperation and developing a competitive transport and logistics ecosystem in the Baltics.
The International Transport and Logistics Alliance (TTLA), founded in 2019, unites 25 of Lithuania’s largest transport and logistics companies and represents a significant share of the international road freight market. The organization works to enhance the sector’s competitiveness and represent business interests at both national and international levels. TTLA members are international hauliers operating in European and Asian markets, forming a vital link in the Baltic region’s logistics chains.

“AeroVictory Baltic” has a paid-in share capital of 20,200 euros. As a result of the transaction, “SAF Tehnika” has acquired 102 shares out of a total of 202 shares, representing 50.5% of the share capital and voting rights.

The smallest companies in the Baltics will be eligible for up to €15 million in loans as a result of an initiative that alternative financing provider Capitalia is undertaking with support from the European Investment Fund (EIF). Capitalia will use an EIF guarantee to offer crowdfunded loans to microenterprises in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania over three years.
Microenterprises, which have fewer than ten employees and annual turnover or total assets below €2 million, often struggle to secure funding from traditional lenders because of limited collateral or credit history.

During the meeting, project partners familiarised themselves with the Port of Luleå, one of the largest cargo ports in Sweden and an important industrial centre in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia. They discussed project activities and latest updates and presented interim results of their work tasks. The Freeport of Ventspils Authority presented a techno-economic and commercial model designed to assess the development potential of solar, wind, and hybrid power plants, as well as green hydrogen and its derivative production facilities.

It is anticipated that fast and systematic analysis of rulings will help reduce the risk of contradictory judgments and inconsistencies in legal interpretation, support the development of more coherent case law, and strengthen trust in the judicial system and public administration overall.

Latvian airline airBaltic is expanding its network for 2026/2027 winter season, running from late October 2026 to the end of March 2027, with the addition of 12 new routes from Riga (Latvia), Gran Canaria and Tenerife (both in Spain), and Kuusamo (Finland). As part of the expanded schedule, the airline will further strengthen its existing Gran Canaria seasonal base, establish a seasonal base in Tenerife, and operate weekend services from Kuusamo.
